The Ukrainian mezzo-soprano Julia Faylenbogen completed her studies at the Nezhdanova Conservatory in Odessa and at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin. She is a prizewinner of the competition »Neue Namen« in Kyiv and represented her home country at the Singer of the World competition in Cardiff. Her early engagements took her to the Deutsche Oper am Rhein’s opera studio and, subsequently, to the Staatsoper Hannover as a permanent ensemble member. There, she appeared in roles including Hänsel in »Hänsel und Gretel«, Niklaus in »Hoffmanns Erzählungen«, Octavian in »Der Rosenkavalier«, and the Composer in »Ariadne auf Naxos«; she also gave a widely acclaimed debut as Carmen. Guest appearances have led her to the Concertgebouw and the Opera in Amsterdam, the Norwegian National Opera, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, as well as the theatres in Lübeck and Bielefeld. In 2010, she appeared in the world premiere of Rihm’s Dionysos at the Salzburg Festival and subsequently performed the production at the Opera in Amsterdam and the Berlin State Opera. Since the 2015/16 season, Faylenbogen has been a member of the ensemble at the Nationaltheater Mannheim.
