Twenty years apart, cellist Emmanuelle Bertrand was named Instrumental Discovery of the Year (2002) and Instrumental Soloist of the Year (2022). She studied at the conservatories in Lyon and Paris, won numerous awards and competitions, and was voted Artist of the Year in 2011 by Diapason magazine and France Musique listeners. At the age of 25, she met Henri Dutilleux, who described her as a »true revelation«. Since then, she has been the dedicatee of works by Nicolas Bacri, Pascal Amoyel and Thierry Escaich, among others, and also premiered Luciano Berio’s »Chanson pour Pierre Boulez«. During this time, she also formed a duo with pianist Pascal Amoyel. Emmanuelle Bertrand performs regularly as a soloist with orchestras including the Lucerne, Montréal, Moscow, Busan, and Québec symphony orchestras, as well as the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, and the national orchestras of Lille, Lorraine, and Strasbourg. In the 2026 season, she will be artist in residence with the Orchestre national d’Île-de-France, with whom she will perform the cello concertos by Saint-Saëns and Elgar. She is a professor of chamber music at the conservatory in Paris and, the first woman in the conservatoire’s history, a professor of violoncello.
